AbebooksGround Zero Books, Ltd. ISBN10: 0670023329, ISBN13: 9780670023325, [publisher: Viking, New York] Hardcover First Edition xvi, [2], 205, [1] pages. Maps. Illustrations. Appendix: The Ten Laws of Camp 14. Notes. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Blaine Harden (born 1952) is an American journalist and author. His 2012 book Escape from Camp 14 is an official biography of North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk. Harden worked for 28 years for The Washington Post as a correspondent in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as in New York and Seattle. Shin Dong-hyuk (born Shin In Geun, 19 November 1981 or 1980) is a North Korean-born human rights activist. He is reputed to be the only known prisoner to have successfully escaped from a "total-control zone" grade internment camp in North Korea. Shin has given talks to audiences around the world about his life in Camp 14 and about the totalitarian North Korean regime to raise awareness of the situation in North Korean internment and concentration camps and North Korea. Shin has been described as the world's "strongest voice" on the atrocities inside North Korean camps. A New York Times bestseller, the shocking story of one of the few people born in a North Korean political prison to have escaped and survived. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin's Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped. But Shin Dong-hyuk did. In Escape from Camp 14, acclaimed journalist Blaine Harden tells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk and through the lens of Shin's life unlocks the secrets of the world's most repressive totalitarian state. Shin knew nothing of civilized existence-he saw his mother as a competitor for food, guards raised him to be a snitch, and he witnessed the execution of his own family. Through Harden's harrowing narrative of Shin's life and remarkable escape, he offers an unequaled inside account of one of the world's darkest nations and a riveting tale of endurance, courage, and survival.
