Description: New York. 1992. Random House. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 039457611x. 992 pages. hardcover. keywords: Literature Law Politics. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Only in our own time have writers and other artists been free to write, sing, and depict what they want. Girls Lean Back Everywhere shows how writers, artists, and their legal defenders achieved this precarious freedom by defeating, if only for the time being, their equally irrepressible antagonists. Girls Lean Back Everywhere is the story of how the arts in America finally came to be protected under the First Amendment, thanks to the stubborn resolve of a few artists, publishers, and exhibitors, together with the efforts of a handful of lawyers and the simple courage and moral brilliance of Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. But this book does far more than trace the triumph of a great legal principle. It is also a vivid portrait, told often in their own voices, of those remarkable twentieth-century artists who defied their powerful opponents and courageously insisted on their absolute right to free expression. Edward de Grazia has crafted an extraordinary chronicle of the battles fought and won in our century in behalf of free expression. In showing how this struggle affected the careers of such artists as Joyce, Lawrence, Edmund Wilson, Vladimir Nabokov, Henry Miller, William Burroughs, Lenny Bruce, and, in our own decade, Robert Mapplethorpe, Karen Finley, Holly Hughes, and others, de Grazia demonstrates the enormous price that these artists and our culture paid for their victories - the misery, the rejection, the energies wasted, the work not done. By the 1960s it had become clear that such writers as Joyce, Lawrence, Henry Miller, and William Burroughs were here to stay and that the Warren Court, led by Justice Brennan, was wise enough to ratify what the majority of Americans clearly wanted. But as de Grazia also shows in this brilliant book, the hand of the censor has not lost its cunning. inventory #16196 ISBN: 039457611x. ISBN 039457611x 9780394576114 [US]

From Publishers Weekly: A remarkable tour de force of literary/legal sleuthing, this massive chronicle of the conflict between artistic expression and censorship covers a vast terrain, from the burning of Zola's novels and the imprisonment of his English publisher, Henry Vizetelly, to the controversies over Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs and rap group 2 Live Crew's record album. De Grazia, a law professor at Cardozo Law School in New York City, who successfully argued the Tropic of Cancer case before the Supreme Court, focuses on writers, publishers and booksellers who stuck their necks out. Through a lively account of the trials and tribulations of James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Radclyffe Hall, Theodore Dreiser, Henry Miller, Allen Ginsberg, Lenny Bruce and others, he demonstrates how interference with creativity by prosecutors, police and judges violates First Amendment freedoms. De Grazia anchors his arguments in legal scholarship. Copyright Date: 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. . Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 1992. 1992. Price: USD 35.00
Dealer: Abebooks, Rareeclectic
Description: ISBN10: 039457611X, ISBN13: 9780394576114, [publisher: Random House, New York] Hardcover First Edition Stated First Edition (along with Number Line to 2-- that's how Random House singularly identifies their First Editions). Signed and inscribed on the blank first front end paper: 'For Elizabeth Prioleau, With esteem and warm regards, Edward de Grazia, 12- 21- 1996.' 'Elizabeth Prioleau has been a scholar in residence at New York University and a professor at Manhattan College. She is the author of Circle of Eros: Sexuality in the Works of William Dean Howells.' You can see the white and black covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. The silver lettering on the spine is bright. The edges and corners look perfect. The spine ends have a little bit of crinkling. The page edges are very clean. This book is very large: 815 pages. The weight of it has created a slightly concave spine, but the binding of the book is excellent. The pages are nicely tight from cover to cover and the covers are also nicely tight. So there are no binding issues which is pretty important what a book this size. Happily, the pages are in excellent shape. I scrolled through them several times without finding even one instance of soiling. The white inside covers and end papers are also perfectly clean. My scrolling through also failed to discover any creasing. Finally, there are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It too is very clean. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. I just removed that protective cover to get a clearer look at the condition of the jacket. I'll be refit the jacket with a new protective cover after the photos are scanned. So, yes it is very clean. There are a few little wrinkles (the kind that sometimes develop from the cellophane finish). These wrinkles are at and around the top and bottom edges of the spine. There are no tears on the jacket. There are very tiny scuffs at the top corners of the middle edges. The flaps are also very clean. They do have mild toning off the bottom and top edges. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. 'Edward de Grazia was an American lawyer, writer, and free speech activist. He was a founding member of the faculty at Benjamin Cardozo School of Law. He was involved in numerous high-profile cases of literary and artistic censorship in the 1960s, including several on behalf of the publisher Barney Rosset who published works by Henry Miller and William Burroughs, among others. De Grazia was also involved in efforts to protect the speech rights of antiwar demonstrators, as described by Norman Mailer in Armies of the Night. His book 'Girls Lean Back Everywhere: The Law of Obscenity and the Assault on Genius', was a lengthy and authoritative history of the struggle against literary censorship.'
