4. Berenice Abbott
by O'Neal Hank
Price: USD 145.00
Dealer: Biblio, Arundel Books of Seattle
Description: Steidl Photography International, Date: 2008. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket (As Issued). 2 volumes, complete as issued. A fair set in publisher's slipcase (slipcase stained and cracked; upper corner of cover of Vol. II has some staining and wear, which also extends to first 20 pages of text at upper corners). With this deluxe, two-volume slipcased set, photography lovers around the world will at last have a thorough retrospective of the work of Berenice Abbott. Portraitist, Atget editor, chronicler of Paris and New York and a giant of twentieth-century photography, Abbott has long gone without a publication encompassing all of the principal strands of her practice. Included herein is her early work as a portrait photographer in Paris during the 1920s, when she learned photography as Man Ray's darkroom assistant and catalogued the city's artistic life with portraits of James Joyce, Jean Cocteau, Peggy Guggenheim, Margaret Anderson, Jane Heap, Sylvia Beach, Bryher and Eugene Atget. (During this time, she adopted the French spelling of her first name, 'Berenice,' at the suggestion of Djuna Barnes.) Her New York photographs of the 1930s are testament to the architectural and social transformations within the city and throughout the United States in that decade. In this period Abbott also began her editorial work on Atget, producing the 1930 book Atget, Photographe de Paris-and her labors on his behalf would continue until the sale of her archive to The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1968. Lesser-known bodies of Abbott's work, such as a road trip from Florida to Maine on Route 1 in the summer of 1954, are also well represented. A final series comprises her scientific images from the 1950s-photographs of physical phenomena for the Physical Science Study Committee of Educational Services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Effectively a catalogue raisonné, this is the definitive publication on the life work of one of the masters of the photographic medium. 2008. Steidl Photography International ISBN 3865215920 9783865215925 [US]

The new two-volume edition of Abbott presents a lot of photos scanned and digitally rendered by the publisher Gerhard Steidl at the request of Ron Kurtz, an American industrialist and photography collector who bought Abbott's archive from her in 1985. The volumes are divided by subject: the first contains her portraits, including the Paris portraits (1920); her pictures made on journeys across the country, between 1935 and 1983; and her scientific pictures, many of which were made at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These are technical illustrations of different scientific phenomena. They are reminiscent of Man Ray's "rayograms", photographs of simple objects against a black background, which he would move in the process to make a ghostly, abstract shape. Volume two is devoted to Changing New York. It was a hugely ambitious and physically dangerous undertaking that needed a good deal of planning and organisation: how to find the right vantage point, how to carry an enormous plate up dozens of floors, how to calculate the wind resistance, the level of light etc. The importance of the correct vantage point was not only for distance but to accentuate the tight layering and juxtaposition of buildings in the city; to show the difference in tempo between the older low-rise blocks and the skyscrapers.
