DJ has shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities (spine label present to the spine). Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This book, which began life as a very competent doctoral thesis, forms a useful addition to the series of monographs on Southern Nigerian coastal communities. The title is misleading; it is not a study of politics and social organization in South Eastern Nigeria, but a history of the Efik state of Old Calabar insofar as this can be deduced from the records, which for all practical purposes begin with the arrival of the Scottish Mission in 1841. They consist mainly of mission and Foreign Office correspondence, reports and journals which, compared to other Nigerian ports, are very full, as the missionaries were living in Old Calabar and the place was almost on the doorstep of the British Consul stationed at Fernando Po. EB; 9.0 X 6.0 X 1.0 inches; 324 pages.
