27. Extreme Waves (Signed)
by Craig B. Smith
Price: USD 30.00
Dealer: Abebooks, Rareeclectic
Description: ISBN10: 0309100623, ISBN13: 9780309100625, [publisher: Joseph Henry Press, Washington DC] Hardcover First Edition First Edition (NAP). Flat-signed by the author on the title page. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They're very clean. There isn't any conspicuous wear. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The white lettering on the spine is very bright. There is a little crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The page edges are very clean. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The white inside covers and endpapers are perfectly clean. That appears to be the case with all of the pages in the book. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere in the book. Can't ask for more. The dust jacket sustains the high quality. You can see it in the first few photographs. It is very clean. There are no tears. There is a wrinkle/crinkle at the bottom edge of the spine. There is an 'Autographed by the author' gold sticker on the front cover. The flaps are in excellent condition, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'It is straight out of a nightmare: a wave almost 100 feet high bears down on your helpless vessel miles from the safety of the shore. That is exactly what a team of British scientists faced as they sailed near the tiny island of Rockall, in the Outer Hebrides. The height of the sea was measured by an onboard wave recorder, making it officially the biggest ever. "For decades sailors have told tales of rogue waves, of 60, 70, even 100 foot monsters that rise from a calm sea and overwhelm ships. Scientists long discounted these because they just didn't make sense. Proven models predict few storm waves as high as 50 feet, even in the midst of a severe storm, with one 100 foot monster predicted every 10,000 years. Yet in July 2004, European researchers announced that during a three-week survey, satellites had captured images of 10 massive ocean waves, some nearly 100 feet high. The sailors appear to have been right, and scientists do not have an adequate answer." --Johns Hopkins Magazine, April 2006.' From the dust jacket: 'Extreme Waves is a fascinating science and history of waves. Covering both the headline stories as well as incidents that are less well-known but equally startling, Craig Smith, author and amateur sailor, will keep you riveted from the first chapter to the last.' Fine condition in a bright and shiny Fine dust jacket. The jacket has only a tiny bit of very mild shelfwear (like you sometimes find in any new book store). NO chips, tears or fading. Bound in the original black cloth, stamped in bright white on the spine. Complete with dust jacket. From the publisher: "Waves are hypnotic and beautiful. They can also be great fun. But Hurricanes Katrina and Rita taught us that they can be powerful and deadly while the 2004 tsunami proved that some waves are absolutely devastating. Science is the best tool for understanding and predicting the most extreme waves. Where do waves come from? Why are some big and some small? From winter to summer, the nature of the beach changes, sculpted by the tireless energy of waves. Most waves are simply rhythmic expressions of Earth’s movement through space and the changes they bring to our shorelines are gradual. But given the right weather conditions and combination of natural forces, waves can wreak havoc. These are extreme waves, waves that can stretch 100-feet highâ€"posing an imminent threat to large sea vessels and coastal structures. There are even waves that have stripped trees from mountains as they surged to an estimated 1,700 feet high. But even smaller waves are dangerous to ships and coastlines. Indeed, the lessons of the 2004 Bay of Bengal tsunami and the damage wrought by recent tidal surges in New Orleans underscore the need for better tracking and prediction of extreme waves. Extreme Waves is a fascinating history of waves. Covering both the headline stories as well as incidents that are less well-known but equally startling Craig Smith, author and amateur sailor, will have you riveted from the first chapter to the last.
