An introductory essay deals with the motivations for and manner of acquisition of ancient art by one of the foremost families of the British aristocracy. The museum proper of marbles had its first major impetus when the fifth Duke arranged housing for several sculptures in a magnificent conservatory, designed by the renowned architect, Henry Holland. It was the sixth Duke who completed his predecessor's transformation of the greenhouse into a sculpture gallery.
