Condition: Fine in Good DJ. 336 Pgs. ISBN 1565548280. LCCN 00-047850. By Lynn M Homan and Thomas Reilly. Foreword by Louis R Parnell. Told through fascinating interviews with veterans and historical photographs, this is the story of the men and women who served in the training program at Tuskegee Army Air Field from 1941 to 1946. Faced with the popular belief that they were incapable of mastering the intricacies of flight, the participants in the Tuskegee Experience proved their detractors wrong. Their story includes accounts of sadness, death, and success, but most importantly, it shares the efforts of African-Americans to serve their country as members of the Armed Forces during the war, despite the attempts of the War Department and Air Corps to exclude them. ISBN10: 1565548280, ISBN13: 9781565548282, [publisher: Pelican Publishing] Hardcover First Edition Signed by Tuskegee Airmen Desvignes, Russell A., B-25 Flt Officer from St. Louis, Missouri. Light wear to covers. Text clean and unmarked. The binding is tight and square. Light wear to the dust jacket. Russell F. Desvignes, 87, of Barstow, Calif., passed away Oct. 5, 2007. He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in New Orleans, where he spent his early years surrounded by poverty and prejudice during the 1930s. Russell's father instilled in his son that education is the road to freedom. Upon graduation from high school, Russell realized his dream of seeing far away places when he received a letter from the military asking him to come to Hawaii and work in a U.S. Naval yard as a civilian laborer. Russell was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked Dec. 7, 1941. This experience pushed him to pursue his dream of becoming a military pilot. Russell faced many obstacles to earn the title of a Tuskegee Airman. The testing and training was rigorous, demanding and highly competitive. Of 200 men that were accepted into the training program in his class, only 34 made it to graduation. Russell was one of the 34, and graduated from the Primary Flying School with his wings as a B-25 Mitchell Bomber pilot Nov. 17, 1944. He trained at Fort Knox, Ky., then Waterloo, S.C., and later was assigned to Okinawa, Japan until WWII ended. [Colorado Springs, CO, U.S.A.] [Publication Year: ...
