He worked as a war correspondent for the Hearst newspapers in Europe during World War II, and his reporting formed the basis of his best-selling book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. After the war, Shirer became a professor at the University of Chicago and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. In 1970 he retired and moved to Charlottesville, Virginia.
