On the 22 July 1955 Gertrude Leather caught the No 33 bus from Twickenham. At 12 35 having paid 4d, she arrived at Hounslow and the first step of a remarkable journey had been taken. Seven days, twenty five bus rides, over 600 miles and £4 5s 9/1/2 later she stood alongside the open door of John O'Groats Hotel. Determined to travel only by service buses with no pre booking her record card shows the signatures of each of the conductors or drivers who issued her with a ticket on the buses as she travelled through Stratford upon Avon, Birmingham, Lancaster, Kendal, Carlisle, Glasgow, Inverness and Wick to the top of Scotland and back again. This story has the benefit of contemporary photographs selected by John Parke, the late editor of Buses Magazine which compliment this remarkable journey through Britain in the hey days of omnibus transport.
