Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co. NY., Date: 1947 Book size about 9 by 10 1/2 inches with some 33 pages. Bound in color illustrated paper covered boards. Double page color illustrated end papers (Same for front and rear). Illustrated throughout in color by Roger Duvoisin. In the original dust wrapper with front flap price of $2.00. Dust wrapper illustration repeats that of the book covers. THE ILLUSTRATOR WON THE 1948 CALDECOTT MEDAL FOR HIS IMAGES IN THIS BOOK. Dust wrapper has a publisher applied large pasted on label indicating the Caldecott Medal winning. Based on my years in the business and knowledge of publisher methods I am certain this is the First Edition in the First Edition dust wrapper. It is very likely that the publisher did not sell all of the original print run and applied the Caldecott Medal sticker to the remaining on hand copies after the book won the prize. Thus almost certainly not a 'second issue' dust wrapper but a true first in all respects but for the Medal sticker. Book with damp stains along the spine edge and bottom edge both front and rear; paper a bit age toned. Wrapper with insect damage to the spine resulting in removal of most of the bottom two inches and occasional damage along the spine; shading discoloration along bottom edge and fore-edge; light edge wear. Very scarce book in the First Edition. VERY GOOD/GOOD. 1st Edition.. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 1947. Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Co. NY. [US]
