ISBN10: 1421847264, ISBN13: 9781421847269, [publisher: 1St World Library - Literary Society] Hardcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The circumstances which I am about to relate to my juvenile readers took place in the year 1647. By referring to the history of England of that date they will find that King Charles the First, against whom the Commons of England had rebelled, after a civil war of nearly five years, had been defeated, and was confined as a prisoner at Hampton Court. The Cavaliers, or the party who fought for King Charles, had all been dispersed, and the Parliamentary army under the command of Cromwell were beginning to control the Commons. It was in the month of November in this year that King Charles, accompanied by Sir John Berkely Ashburnham and Legg, made his escape from Hampton Court, and rode as fast as the horses could carry them towards that part of Hampshire which led to the New Forest. The king expected that his friends had provided a vessel in which he might escape to France; but in this he was disappointed. There was no vessel ready, and after riding for some time along the shore he resolved to go to Titchfield, a seat belonging to the Earl of Southampton.

It is place in the time of the English Civil War and the Commonwealth. The story accompanies the fortunes of the four Beverley children (Edward, Humphrey, Alice and Edith) who are orphaned during the war, and hide from their Roundhead tyrants in the shelter of the New Forest where they grasp to live off the land. These four children in the novel usually become ideal models of manhood and womanhood, and even the gypsy boy Pablo is trained into their civilising ways. The peril they build to bait cattle catches more than they deal for, leading to one experience after another. Against all chances they dextrously exercise through the traitorous landscape of the times, usually recovering their family estate. Their deeds and efforts to live in the forest form the center of this novel. This book is a celebration of genteel ness, courage and tolerance.

ISBN10: 1420971751, ISBN13: 9781420971750, [publisher: Digireads.Com] Softcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - First Published in 1847, 'The Children of the New Forest' is the enduringly popular children's novel by British author and Royal Navy officer Frederick Marryat. 'The Children of the New Forest' was an early children's historical novel and has remained well-read and often adapted for the screen. The story is set during the English Civil War and begins in 1647 when King Charles I was defeated and fled from London towards the New Forest, one of England's last great woodlands. Soldiers sent to search the forest decide to burn Arnwood, the manor home of Colonel Beverly, a Cavalier officer who had died in battle. Beverly's four children are thought to have died in the fire, but instead are rescued and make a new and simpler life for themselves in the New Forest. However, the dangers and complications of war and politics are never far away and the Beverly children must use their cleverness and bravery to survive it. An entertaining story with well-crafted and engaging characters, 'The Children of the New Forest' remains one of English literature's best novels for young readers. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper. 230 pp. Englisch

ISBN10: 1853261106, ISBN13: 9781853261107, [publisher: Wordsworth Editions Ltd, Herts] Softcover Paperback. Cavalier and Roundhead battle it out in the turbulent setting of the English Civil war and provide the background for this classic tale of four orphans as they face adversity, survival in the forest, reconciliation and eventual forgiveness. This is the first enduring historical novel for children, which conjures up as much magic today as it did on first publication. The freedom from adult constraint allied with the necessary disciplines to survive in a hostile world make for a gripping read. AUTHOR Captian Frederick Marryat (1792 - 1848) spent most of his working life at sea, and used his experiences for the basis of much of his writing. His works are now largely forgotten, with the exception of his popular children's book, 'The Children of the New Forest'. Cavalier and Roundhead battle it out in the turbulent setting of the English Civil war. This book tells the tale of four orphans as they face adversity, survival in the forest, reconciliation and eventual forgiveness.
