[publisher: Smith, Elder and Co., London] Hardcover The King of the Golden River or The Black Brothers: A Legend of Stiria. By John Ruskin. Illustrated by Richard Doyle. Published by Smith, Elder and Co. in 1867. A Sixth Edition. Size: 5 1/2 x 7 inches. Page number: 64. Hardcover. Orange cloth boards with gilt decoration. The page that precedes the title page and the page opposite that page are particularly well illustrated. Within the text there are a number of engravings. Condition: Good. The boards are a little grubby, the gilding a little worn. There is an ink stain on the front board. The contents are marked here and there with small stains, a little thumbed, and somewhat foxed, this being most evident at the beginning and end of the book, and on the end blocks. The title page tissue guard is creased. The binding remains tight however and the corners and spine show only a small amount of wear.

Ruskin called this a "fairy tale, " and he wrote it for the twelve-year-old girl that he later married. It dates to 1841 and was first published ten years later. It became rather wildly popular. This is a Very Good copy of the Fifth English Edition. Bright orange cloth binding, ruled on the covers; gilt titling and decoration on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 64 pages; with twenty-two illustrations by Richard Doyle. Very bright and fresh text. The spine has darkened, and the orange binding shows some soiling. There is an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down. The front hinge is cracked but appears to be holding well.
