Appears to be a First Edition but not absolutely certain - publishing date of 1860 on title page, no date on copyright page. Gift note on front free endpaper, dated New Years 1860. Contains 21 engraved illustrations, including frontispiece and title page, designed and drawn on wood by Richard Doyle. Binding is shaken with front hinge starting but all pages are fully intact. Blue cloth over hard covers with gilt lettering and illustration on front cover and spine, all edges gilt. Edges and spine show wear, corners are well-worn, showing the boards, portion of top and bottom spine edges are chipped off, 3/4 inch cut along spine edge near top. Gilt on front cover is still very shiny, slightly dulled here and there, back cover has a couple of small stains and rub marks. Pages are slightly browned, generally quite clean with a smudge mark in the margins here and there. Endpages, frontispiece with tissue guard and title page have a bit of staining.
