[publisher: London: Longman, Green & Co., 1889] First Edition First edition, large paper copy, number 13 of 113 copies, the deluxe limited issue of the first in Lang's series of "coloured" fairy books, which continued through to The Lilac Fairy Book in 1910. Only four of the titles (Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow) from the series of 12 were issued in this deluxe format. The Blue Fairy Book was immediately successful, and the series effected a seismic shift in the public's taste for fairytales. Unprecedented in the international scope of its sources, the success of the series also owes much "to the devoted work of their illustrator, who. provided a benchmark in fantasy illustration" (Grolier). Though it is Andrew Lang's name which appears as the author of the fairy books, they were largely the result of the work of others, most crucially female translators such as his wife, Leonora (1851-1933) and others such as May Kendall and Margaret Hunt, both of whom also published fairy tales collections in their own name. Lang acknowledged this in the preface to The Lilac Fairy Book (1910): "The fairy books have been almost wholly the work of Mrs. Lang, who has translated and adapted them from the French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, and other languages". Grolier Children's 100, 51; Peter Harrington, Leonora Lang's Rainbow Fairy Books, article online. Quarto. Original white and grey boards, titles to ...

ISBN10: 177437949X, ISBN13: 9781774379493, [publisher: Engage Classics] Hardcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Blue Fairy Book assembles a wide range of tales, including seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norwegian fairytales. The Fairy Books are some of Andrew Lang's most notable works. Lang was fighting against the critics of his day who judged fairy tales as being harmful for young readers. Over a generation, Lang's books worked a revolution in this public perception. These collections have been immensely influential, as their publication was the first time many of these stories had been written in English. The series was immediately popular due to Lang's reputation as a folklorist and the packaging of the uniform books. The series proved of great influence in children's literature, increasing the popularity of fairy tales over tales of real life.

ISBN10: 9357276432, ISBN13: 9789357276436, [publisher: Double 9 Books] Softcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Blue Fairy Book is a series of 25 compilations of factual and made-up stories for kids that Andrew Lang and his wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne, produced between 1889 and 1913. The 12 collections of fairy tales that make up Andrew Lang's 'Colored' Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's Fairy Books of Many Colors are the most well-known books in the series. Along with the 153 poems in The Blue Poetry Book, the volumes contain a total of 798 stories. The majority of the labor was done by Nora, even though Andrew is frequently given credit for choosing the stories in the Fairy Books. These were translated into English by her and a group of writers, largely women, including May Kendall and Violet Hunt, who modified them to fit Victorian and Edwardian expectations of decorum. The Green Fairy Book, the third book in the series, is where Nora's contribution is first acknowledged. She is then given the following name: 'Madame Lang ' and writes the majority of the retellings. Henry Justice Ford illustrated The Red Book of Heroes (1909) and The Book of The 12 Colored Fairy Books; credit for the first two volumes was split between G. P. Jacomb-Hood and Lancelot Speed.
