Gandhi had been an astute political campaigner who fought for and won Indian independence from British rule, and championed the rights of the Indian poor. His example of non-violent protest set the example for Martin Luther King and others, and is still revered throughout the world today.Gandhi’s biography states: “He stopped at the thresholds of the huts of the thousands of dispossessed, dressed like one of their own. He spoke to them in their own language. Here was living truth at last, and not only quotations from books, for this reason the Mahatma [Great Soul], the name given to him by the people of India, is his real name. Who else has felt like him that all Indians are his own flesh and blood? When love came to the door of India, that door was opened wide. Communities, families and farms were cut in two. Immediately, there began one of the greatest migrations in human history, as millions of Muslims trekked to West and East Pakistan (the latter now known as Bangladesh), while millions of Hindus and Sikhs headed in the opposite direction. Typed Letter Signed, 1 page, Baltimore, October 21, 1931 to Mr. Hart. “A ‘tap on the nose’ is far too polite an attention for Gandhi. I’d much prefer a swift kick where his pantaloons would be if he wore any. Paperback. Fair. 113 photos and 7 postcards. The photos are generally rather small -- many approximately 9 x 6cm. A mixture of amateur and commercial photos -- the latter mostly related to India and Sri Lanka; many browned, some faded. Housed in an old black oblong photo album. Flexible cover rather worn (front cover threatening to become detached). Most of the black paper leaves are detached. There are many blank leaves at the end but nothing appears to have been removed. Bob [no last name] appears to have grown up in northeastern Pennsylvania. Many of the non-Asian photos relate to two camps -- Camp Brooks in 1929, and Camp Stuart (which seems to have been a Pennsylvania National Guard camp) in 1930. Other locales were Newton Lake, Finch Hill (a couple of planes), and Niagara Falls. Bob and some other young men appear to have visited India in 1935. There are 27 photos of India, mostly standard tourist sights, a few include Bob in the picture. One photo, probably commercial, is of a seated, loin-cloth clad, Gandhi speaking or gesturing, with several people in front of him who seem to be occupied in their own conversations. There are five postcards and one photo relating to Sri Lanka. US

Eli Stanley Jones (1884-1973) was an American Methodist Christian missionary, theologian, and author, renowned for his significant contributions to interreligious dialogue in India. Jones formed a close friendship with Mahatma Gandhi, and after Gandhi's assassination, he wrote a biography of his life. This connection played a pivotal role in inspiring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. towards non-violence in the Civil Rights Movement. King acknowledged that it was Jones' biography of Gandhi that influenced his commitment to nonviolent activism, marking an important link between Jones, Gandhi, and the principles that guided the American Civil Rights Movement. 1948. Honsinger was the American founder of World Education and World Literacy Canada. She was married to Frederick Bohn Fisher (the author), a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, missionary, and official in Methodist missionary and men's movements. She was an intellectual, activist, feminist and also wrote in Introduction to this book. She was requested by her friend Mohandas Gandhi to begin Literacy House outside of Lucknow, India, at the age of 73. The Fishers were well-acquainted with and respected by Gandhi and other prominent leaders of the Indian Independence movement. Her husband died in 1938 and this book was first published in America in 1932. One critic regarding this book as one "that the British Government regards as important enough to be dangerous..
