Brauner Ledereinband mit Holzdeckeln, Einband stark berieben/falzrissig, mit Fehlstellen und mit Resten von Buchschnallen (Nägel), blindgeprägte Zierlinien auf den Deckeln, auf Vorsatz ein handschriftliches Exlibris einer Frau, Auf der Rückseite der Titelseite ein gestempeltes Exlibris aus dem Burgenland. Papier in altersgemäßem sehr gutem Zustand, lediglich Nachsatz fleckig. Aus bibliophiler Sicht aufgrund des Verlagsortes sowie der verwendeten Drucktechnik, zweispaltig im Stehsatz, wofür ca. 5 Mio. Lettern nötig waren. Zudem handelt es sich bei der verwendeten Schriftgröße um Nonpareilles, einer sehr kleinen Drucktype. First edition of the so-called "Ulrich-Bibel", an important new version of the Zurich bible. The editor was pastor at Grossmüster and was close to Pietism. This edition is one of the most carefully edited Bibles and comes with regard to the beauty of the printing close to that of Froschauer's publication. The text is based on the 1667 and 1724 editions; it was revised and adapted to the more wide-spread use of modern high German. Johann Caspar Ulrich (1705-1768) was in charge, under the supervision of the Church Council. In the "Kurze Anzeige" at the beginning, Johann Konrad Nüscheler gives a bibliography of Zurich bibles. Together with Johann Rudolf Ziegler, he was also involed in the text revision. Binding just a little worn, with some scuffing here and there; but nice and tight, and internally clean and unmarked. A few plates with discreet paper repairs on the verso. Somerset [pa. ]: Friedrich Goeb. Very Good. Date: 1813. First Edition. Leather. Folio 13" - 23" tall; Folio, 33cm. 2 p. L. [1]-527[1] [1]-66 p. , 1l. , 1-169[1]p. A handsome and well preserved copy of this rarity of early American Bible printing. Goeb’s Bible was printed in 1813 in “frontier” America, on a press carried in pieces by mule over the Allegheny Mountains. It is bound in original full calf over wooden boards; spine in six panels with five raised bands. Remnants only of original clasps and straps present. All endpages are present and intact. Text in two columns. Includes Old and New Testaments with separate title pages. Apocraphya is between Testaments and is separately paged. Not often found in such well preserved condition, this copy has had only minimal restoration to the front hinge. A professional and sympathetic mend was effected using archival material. The intact cords were strengthened. Original leather rubbed at edges and corners, with light surface scarring - but much less so than in copies usually seen. Front several pages have a vertical crease near the gutter. Scattered foxing and toning. First several leaves with furred edges and several minor margin tears. A last leaf of recommended readings, Anweisung der ... Episteln und Evangelien, is not present – though there is no evidence of any missing page. Eighteenth-century Churchbook bound in a black leather binding, richly decorated with silver fittings. The beautifully designed silverwork consists of eight corner pieces, two central ornaments, and two clasps. All the silverwork with a beautiful design of different biblical figures. Contemporary red full leather with rich gilding on both covers and the spine, three-sided gauffered gilt edges with inscription. The famous Somerset German Bible of 1813, is the first Bible published west of the Allegheny Mountains. Charles Friedrich Goeb was a Mennonite minister, as well as a master printer in Western Pennsylvania. He came to Somerset, PA in 1809. Printing the bible was an enomous undertaking, especially in the wilderness that was then Somerset. It involved: the setting of millions of pieces of type; carving the titlepage and ornament blocks; purchasing, storing, and printing at least 50,000 large full sheets of paper; binding probably 500 copies. In addition, he apparently also wrote: the Preface, the Remarks prefixed to each chapter of the Five Books of Moses, the Commentary to the Song of Solomon and St. John's Revelations. Goeb calls this the 'Die Erste Auflage (First Edition) on both the General and New Testament title pages. He may have been referring to the remarks that he added. GLP/USA 2004; Studer. Moderate foxing throughout, darkening dampstain to margins of closing 40 pages, not affecting legibility; contents clean, no markings, pages supple w/ no brittleness; mild edge nicks only to front & rear endpapers. Leather shows darkened speckling, chipping across top edge of rear cover, very beginnings of a split/crack down rear edge of spine (no loosening to board); binding & hinges firm with only front endpaper just barely beginning to loosen.
