New York: Random House, Date: 1954. # 47 in the Landmark Books Series copyright 1954, 9th printing 8vo size gray cloth bound hardcover with brown and blue decorations on spine and front cover and blue titles on spine and front cover; color illustrated endpapers showcase other books in the Series. Illustrated throughout with black and white and black and green illustrations. This is a biography of Dolley Madison (1768 - 1849) wife of the fourth president of the United States, James Madison. Dolley was first spouse to serve in the capacity of what is now known as the First Lady (a role she also filled on occasion for Madison's predecessor, Thomas Jefferson, who was a widower.) Dolley may be best remembered for her actions in saving a painting of George Washington during the 1814 British attack on Washington and the White House. Front cover has light soil, back cover has soil or foxing. There is small area on bottom corner of fep with adhesive residue where sticker was removed. We note soil on the blank page opposite page 1, page 1-4, 27, 46, 58, 86, 98, 112-113, 118-119, 121, 128, 147, 151-152, 154-163, 179, 181 and small spot on outside pages.
