Given these serious condition problems, this should be considered a reading copy only. Synopsis: In the winter of 878, Guthrum, the Viking war leader, launched a "two-pronged attack on the last free Christian kingdom of Wessex, and drove Alfred into a guerrilla refuge on an islet in the Somerset swamp.
