("Dorothy Parker") in black fountain pen ink, on "Assignment of All Rights" form, February 2, Date: 1942. 13 3/4" x 8 1/4", 1 page (with embossed notary public seal). Parker's contract with Samuel Goldwyn Inc., for her work on the screenplay for "The Pride of the Yankees," for which she did not receive any screen credit; only Jo Swerling and Henry J. Mankiewicz are given credit for the screenplay. Renowned wit Dorothy Parker seems like an odd choice to pen a screenplay about a famous baseball player who gets a terrible disease and dies, but nonetheless Samuel Goldwyn hired her, as this document attests. Parker was paid $1,458.33 for her draft. The film, which Goldwyn was sure would be box office poison, was hugely successful, winning as Academy Award for best editing and garnering nominations in seven other categories including Best Picture. "The Pride of the Yankees" was released by Goldwyn in 1942, directed by Sam Wood, starring Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan, and Dan Durea. 1942. US

New York: Viking Press, Date: 1962. Hardcover. Fair. First edition. Rear hinge restored, multiple drink rings and stains on the boards, a few small stains in text, a poor copy with jacket flaps glued into the rear blanks, otherwise lacking the dustwrapper (with a later supplied homemade brown paper jacket). An interesting albeit conditionally grubbing copy, with a bookplate on front pastedown presenting the book to a Los Angeles-area library from Dorothy Parker. Parker returned to Los Angeles in 1961 to reconcile with her estranged husband Alan Campbell (who committed suicide in 1963). Presumably Parker found Kesey's first book serviceable as a drink's coaster. Something of a generational keystone, this novel was the basis for the 1975 film that was the first to win all five major Oscars since *It Happened One Night* in 1934. 1962. Viking Press US

Universal City: Universal Pictures, Date: 1942. Vintage reference photograph taken on the set of the 1942 film, showing an elaborate ballroom scene, with director Alfred Hitchcock, cameraman Joseph Valentine, and actors Priscilla Lane and Robert Cummings in conversation in the foreground. With a printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso. A high spot among Alfred Hitchcock's early thrillers, and the director's only collaboration with author Dorothy Parker, who contributed to the screenplay. The film included much more location footage than most of the director's pictures, including Boulder Dam, locations in New York City including Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center, and of course Liberty Island for the famed closing scene on the Statue of Liberty. 10 x 8 inches. New York: The Viking Press, Date: 1958 Illustrated with black and white photographs. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed on front free endpaper from Oppenheimer to Dorothy Parker: "To Dorothy / With gratitude, love / and the hope that / she will like being / in here as much as / I like having her / in a book of mine. / Always, / George." Publisher's lavender boards, front board lettered and ruled in purple, spine with gilt lettering on purple label, and purple topstain; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Robert Hallock, lettered in white, blue, and pink. Very good with light toning to spine ends and board edges, light fraying to spine ends, and minor wear to lower corners; good unclipped dust jacket with chipping to spine ends, front flap detached (but present), chipping to rear panel corners and a chip to rear flap fore edge, light edgewear including a few small closed tears and a small chip to top of rear panel, and minor soiling to rear panel, unfaded panels and spine that present nicely. Overall, a bright example with a wonderful association. In his introduction to the book, theater critic George Oppenheimer describes The Passionate Playgoer as "a contradiction in terms...an anthology, a compendium, an omnibus of other people's work, and yet it is completely personal." He goes on to write, "This is a book by and about people and plays that I knew, or admired so extravagantly that I thought I knew them." ...

All are personal in nature and show the wit and warmth of the correspondents. Correspondence protected in plastic sleeves; housed in a full green morocco case with gilt tooling and lettering, lined with green cloth and marbled paper; All VG, with light age toning and creasing as usual; Paper used for telegrams is beginning to become brittle; 1) A postcard in Dorothy Parker's handwriting directed to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lyons, postmarked October 12, 1940 from Sun Valley, Idaho. It reads: "We're here with Ernest Hemingway and how are you four? Love from us all, Dorothy and Alan". Small patches of yellowed adhesive at top corners, not impacting readability. 2) A typed letter signed by George Kaufman directed to Leonard Lyons, dated April 7, 1943. Kaufman writes to ask that Lyons make a one-minute war bonds speech at a theatre on the week of April 19th-25th. Kaufman has added a handwritten note at the bottom of the page: "Here's your chance for a spotlight, Leonard. G." 3) A telegram from Moss Hart to Leonard Lyons, dated February 19, 1940, informing him that Hart will be leaving Hollywood the following day. "To you I send a fierce kiss and to Sylvia all the passion I can spare." Minor chipping to lower left corner. 4) A telegram to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Lyons from Moss Hart and George and Beatrice ...

Connell, Jr.; "New York at 6:30 P.M.," a kind-of profile of artist John Koch, by Dorothy Parker; and a brief photo-illustrated feature about actress Sue Lyon.
