Schoolcraft spent his life studying the manners and customs of Native Americans, and in 1822 was appointed agent of Indian Affairs of the Northwest frontier. In1847 he was asked by Congress to do research on the tribes of the United States, and from 1850-1857 he published six volumes on the history, condition and prospects of the American Indian. In 1880 Drake would update Schoolcraft's work, and publish his efforts in these two rather massive volumes. In 1847 Congress authorized School craft, explorer and former superintendent of Indian Affairs in Michigan, to collect historical and statistical information on the country's native inhabitants. First published in 1851 in six massive quarto volumes as Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the Indian Tribes of the united States, Schoolcraft's work was intended to be a great encyclopedia of Information relating to the AMerican ABorigines.
