[publisher: Secker & Warburg] FIRST EDITION, pp. [viii], 312, crown 8vo, original terracotta cloth, backstrip lettered in blue, top edge blue, dustjacket separated along upper joint-fold and with splitting to front flap-fold, a little chipped elsewhere, good. Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'For Elinore & Fred Stettenheim, with thanks & admiration, Jimmy Stern, 25.6.39'. The recipients were part of the same New York Jewish family as Walter Lippmann. An uncommon book, the more so inscribed – the stories all have childhood as their theme, in different settings. The book's printed dedication is to Brian Howard.
