ISBN10: 009175030X, ISBN13: 9780091750305, [publisher: Cornerstone, United Kingdom, London] Softcover Eamon de Valera is the subject of this biography. From the 1916 Rising, the troubled Treaty negotiations and the Civil War, right through to his retirement after a longer period in power than any other twentieth century leader, de Valera has both defined and divided Ireland. He was directly responsible for the Irish Constitution, Fianna Fail (the largest Irish political party) and the Irish Press Group. He helped create a political church-state monolith with continuing implications for Northern Ireland, the social role of women, the Irish language and the whole concept of an Irish nation. Many of the challenges he confronted are still troubling the peace of Ireland and of Britain, and some of the problems are his legacy. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

ISBN10: 009175030X, ISBN13: 9780091750305, [publisher: Hutchinson, London] Hardcover First Edition xii, 772 pages + of illustrations. Original publisher's cloth, spine lettered gilt, with unclipped dust jacket. Eamon de Valera (generally known as 'Dev' or 'the Long Fellow') remains a towering presence whose long shadow still falls over Irish life. Quite simply the history of Ireland for much of the twentieth century is the history of de Valera. From the 1916 Rising, the troubled Treaty negotiations and the Civil War, right through to his retirement after longer in power than any other twentieth-century leader, he has both defined and divided Ireland. Directly responsible for three creations, any one of which would have ensured fame: the Irish constitution, Fianna Fail, and the Irish Press Group. He helped create a political church-state monolith with implications for Northern Ireland, the social role of women, the Irish language and the whole concept of an Irish nation. De Valera was a world figure who remade Ireland, and yet attempted to confine his nation of disciples to the narrowest of cultural and intellectual horizons. Previous owner's stamp on preliminaries, otherwise a fine copy without any damage, library stamps, inscriptions or other markings. *** WEIGHT OVER 1.3KG, EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGE WILL BE REQUESTED FOR DELIVERIES OUTSIDE OF IRELAND AND UNITED KINGDOM ***

Date: 1993. London, Hutchinson, 1993. Octavo. XII, 772 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket in protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Out of print. Two related newspaper articles about De Valera from 1998 loosely inserted. Éamon de Valera (first registered as George de Valero; changed some time before 1901 to Edward de Valera; 14 October 1882 – 29 August 1975) was a prominent politician and statesman in twentieth-century Ireland. His political career spanned over half a century, from 1917 to 1973; he served several terms as head of government and head of state. He also led the introduction of the Constitution of Ireland. De Valera was a leader in the War of Independence and of the anti-Treaty opposition in the ensuing Irish Civil War (1922–1923). After leaving Sinn Féin in 1926 due to its policy of abstentionism, he founded Fianna Fáil, and was head of government (President of the Executive Council, later Taoiseach) from 1932 to 1948, 1951 to 1954, and 1957 to 1959, when he resigned after being elected as President of Ireland. His political creed evolved from militant republicanism to social and cultural conservatism. Assessments of de Valera's career have varied; he has often been characterised as a stern, unbending, devious, and divisive Irish politician. Biographer Tim Pat Coogan sees his time in power as being characterised by economic and cultural stagnation, while Diarmaid Ferriter argues that the stereotype of de Valera ...
