Signature and some personal annotations from J. Mansfeld on free endpaper. Notae doctae J. Mansfeld. A lot of markings, underlinings and annotations from JM. Series: Oxford Philosophical Monographs. ?In this thorough and detailed inquiry K.(aramanolis) studies the various ways in which a number of self-styled Platonists looked at Aristotle as a more or less (especially less) dissenting disciple of Plato, and argued either in favour of agreement on all or the most important major points, or rejected part or much of Aristotle?s philosophy as useless. One learns a lot about ancient Platonism from this point of view. A general introduction is followed by seven case studies, viz. by chapters dealing with Antiochus, Plutarch of Chaeronea, Numenius, Atticus the severe critic of Aristotle, Ammonius Saccas, Plotinus, and Porphyry. One notes with some surprise that a chapter on Alcinous is lacking. (?) He studies his seven representatives of what became an interpretative tradition (?), and concludes that it is Porphyry, the first Platonist (he argues) to write commentaries on Aristotelian treatises, who is responsible for the integration of substantial sections of Aristotle?s oeuvre in this curriculum. (?) In each substantial case study K. attempts to establish what exactly according to, say, Antiochius, or Plotinus, the pur ...

ISBN10: 0199264562, ISBN13: 9780199264568, [publisher: Oxford University Press, Oxford] Hardcover Hardcover. George Karamanolis breaks new ground in the study of later ancient philosophy by examining the interplay of the two main schools of thought, Platonism and Aristotelianism, from the first century BC to the third century AD. From the time of Antiochus and for the next four centuries Platonists were strongly preoccupied with the question of how Aristotle's philosophy compared with the Platonic model. Scholars have usually classified Platonists into two groups, theorthodox ones and the eclectics or syncretists, depending on whether Platonists rejected Aristotle's philosophy as a whole or accepted some Peripatetic doctrines. Karamanolis argues against this dichotomy. He argues that Platonists turned to Aristotle only in order to discover and elucidate Plato's doctrines and thus to reconstruct Plato's philosophy, and they did not hesitate to criticize Aristotle when judging him to be at odds with Plato. For them, Aristotle was merely auxlilary to their accessing and understanding Plato. Platonists were guided in their judgement about Aristotle's proximity to, or distance from, Plato by their own assumptions about what Plato's doctrines were. Alsocrucial for their judgement were their views about which philosophical issues particularly mattered. Given the diversity of views rehearsed in Plato's works, Platonists were flexible enough t ...
