London: Pan Books, Date: 1977. Second printing [stated]. Mass market paperback. Good. 284, [4] pages. Illustrations. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration. Slightly curved. Group Captain Harry Melville Arbuthnot Day GC, DSO, OBE (3 August 1898 - 11 March 1977) was a Royal Marine and later an RAF pilot during the WWII. As a prisoner of war, he was senior British officer in a number of camps and a noted escapee. Together with Roger Bushell, he planned and organized the "Great Escape". Day was taken to Berlin and was interviewed by Arthur Nebe, the man who selected the 50 escapers to be murdered. Sydney Smith joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War, serving as a pilot in a Blenheim Squadron until he was shot down over Rotterdam harbor in 1941. He spent the remainder of the war as a POW, in which capacity he made the acquaintance of 'Wings' Day. Day was the man who planned the first successful escaper's tunnel, developed elaborate code networks with Britain, built an organisation which could make, win or forge anything, pinned down t ...
