Coningham joined the New Zealand Army in WWI and fought in Gallipoli until he was invalided out of the army after contracting typhoid fever. He went to Britain, learned to fly and served the rest of the war in the RAF shooting down nine aircraft. During WWII Coningham led the RAF forces during the North African Campaign and the Allied Air Forces in the Normandy Campaign. Coningham pushed for forward air control parties to assist with close air support missions. Written by a New Zealand historian and professor, the book was originally printed in Britain in 1990. ISBN10: 0413145808, ISBN13: 9780413145802, [publisher: Methuen, London] Hardcover Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham rose to high rank in the RAF in WWII from relatively humble beginnings. Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand he joined the NZ Army at the outbreak of WWI and was involved in that country's occupatiojn of German Samoa. Discharged from the army with a sickness contracted in Samoa he was returned to NZ from Egypt. In 1916 he sailed for England at his own expense to join the RFC. By early in 1918 he had risen to command 92 Squadron in the newly formed RAF. He remained with that service and at the outbreak of WWII led a Bomber Command group for two years, then became head of the Desert Air Force in North Africa, where he won renown as an innovative and inspiring leader. Later he played a cruicial role in the D-Day landings and the operation of his Second Tactical Air Force up to the defeat of Germany. Shortly after retiring from the RAF in 1948 he was lost as a passenger aboard a civilian airliner which disappeared without trace over the Atlantic. The author has compiled an excellent biography of an exceptional, but little recalled WWII Allied leader. This an ex-library copy of the first edition of 1990. 292 pages including notes, sources and index, 32 b/w photos, eight maps.
