Drawing upon historical, mythological, and archaeological materials, Dr. Sjöqvist carefully evaluates and clarifies the relationships of the Greek colonists to the indigenous Sicels during different periods of colonization, particu- larly in the light of the colonists' persistent efforts to gain territory and penetrate the interior regions of the island. When these efforts were peacefully maneuvered, peace- ful coexistence and prosperity followed; but when the efforts for expansion were ruth- lessly devised and carried out, the Greek colonists often met resistance from the Sicels. -- The author concludes that two physical factors, the great space and immense natural wealth of the island, gave to the Greek civilization in Sicily a special tint which was different from that of the mother country.
