When these efforts were peacefully maneuvered, peace- ful coexistence and prosperity followed; but when the efforts for expansion were ruth- lessly devised and carried out, the Greek colonists often met resistance from the Sicels. -- The author concludes that two physical factors, the great space and immense natural wealth of the island, gave to the Greek civilization in Sicily a special tint which was different from that of the mother country.
