Cambridge University Press, Date: 2000. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Fine. Inscription to previous owner on flyleaf, contents otherwise clean and unmarked, slight edgewear to jacket. This is a well researched history of Prussia as a province of the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth, and its major cities Thorn, Elbing, and Gdansk (Dansig) from 1466 to 1772 (first Polish partition) and 1793 (second Polish partition). It dispels the invented myths which still prevail today that Prussia always retained a strong German orientation before the partition of Poland. The Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth offered more privileges to the Prussian nobles and burghers within the realm than did other European states. It is for this reason the Prussians including Germans, Poles, Lithuanians, Dutch, Jews and the surviving descendants of the original Baltic Prussians had a strong allegiance to the Polish monarchs rather than to Brandenburg. (Reader review) 308 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; ISBN/EAN: 9780521583350. Inventory No: dscf11579. . 9780521583350 2000.
