ISBN10: 0710086350, ISBN13: 9780710086358, [publisher: Routledge & Kegan Paul, London] Hardcover First published in 1912 as 'Thrilling Stories of the Railway', this is a first reissue edition of 1977. Minor edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, slight cockling to back jacket, corners slightly rubbed, but jacket still bright and unsunned. Price clipped, no inscriptions, slight lean, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy of a scarce book. 256pp. Much admired in his day, sadly Victor Lorenzo Whitechurch (1868-1933), has now largely been forgotten as a writer of detective fiction. He was a Church of England clergyman and author, probably best known for his detective stories featuring Thorpe Hazell. Hazell was a vegetarian railway detective, whom the author intended to be as far from Sherlock Holmes as possible. Another character was the spy Captain Ivan Koravitch. Whitechurch's stories were admired by Ellery Queen and Dorothy L. Sayers for their "immaculate plotting and factual accuracy", and he was one of the first writers to submit his manuscripts to Scotland Yard for vetting as to police procedure.
