ISBN10: 0802043909, ISBN13: 9780802043900, [publisher: University of Toronto Press] Hardcover It may not be too much to say that all the work Western philosophers have done over the past two thousand years was begun by the Pre-Socratics. The Phoenix Pre-Socratic series has been instrumental in recovering Pre-Socratic texts. As with earlier works in this important series, this volume aims to make an important portion of Pre-Socratic writings accessible to all those interested in ancient philosophy and the first phase of European natural science. We now have, for the first time in English a translation of the bulk of texts concerning the atomists, with commentary. The work contains a new presentation of the evidence for the thought of Leucippus and Democritus, based on the original sources. It includes a Greek text of the fragments, in a new selection, with facing English translation. The testimonia (all newly translated) are presented in a new selection, designed to clarify the structure of the atomists thought and to present their texts in their argumentative context as far as possible. The notes and commentary aim to reflect the complexity and diversity of their thought, with particular emphasis on their metaphysical foundations, psychology, epistemology and ethics. Sections on biology, astronomy and theology are also included. Complete indexes, concordances and bibliography are included. Bookplate inside cover, light foxing to page edges

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - PREFACE -- The aim of this work is to present the ancient evidence, both direct and indirect, for the thought of Leucippus and Democritus, and to assist the critical evaluation of the thought of those philosophers by the provision of a commentary on the evidence. In accordance with the format of the series to which it belongs, a Greek text of the fragments is provided, accompanied by facing translation, whereas the testimonia are given in translation only. The policy which has determined the selection of fragments is explained in the commentary at the beginning of the section on Ethics and Politics (pp. 222-7). -- As explained in the commentary, the evidence for the atomists presents the peculiar feature that, while the number of purported fragments is large, very few fragments deal with the atomists' central doctrines, for which we are almost wholly reliant on doxographical evidence. Consequently the commentary, with the exception of the section on Ethics and Politics, is almost exclusively confined to the testimonia. The f ...
