ISBN10: 1861761783, ISBN13: 9781861761781, [publisher: Greenhill Books, United Kingdom, London] Softcover There have probably been more biographies of Nelson than any other naval officer in history, partly because of his status as a national hero but also because of a character so contradictory that it poses a real challenge to the biographer's art. Unsurprisingly for a budding novelist in love with the sea, Forester found the subject irresistible, and in 1929 this book became his first foray into the field of non-fiction. It is a very competent account of the main events of Nelson's life - and Forester certainly understood the ships and seamanship of the era - but where it really scores is when the novelist's imagination is brought to bear on Nelson's often mysterious motivation. Forester's judgements are generally sympathetic and this book began the swing away from the prevailing Victorian view that regarded many of Nelson's actions as embarrassing or culpable. One incidental, but significant, interest in the book is its probable influence on the Hornblower series of novels that Forester was to begin some years later. Not only is the background information necessary for the biography to be found throughout the novels, but aspects of the character of the fictional Horatio can be glimpsed in Forester's view of the real-life officer. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or hig ...

ISBN10: 1861761783, ISBN13: 9781861761781, [publisher: Chatham Publishing, London England] Hardcover Hardback. Nelson. Without avoiding Nelson's flaws, Forester Delineates a character he obviously liked, one whose personal side is always observable, and who was so much more attractive than his two great contempories, Wellington and Napoleon. Forester brilliantly brings the man alive and, as a student of human nature, is able to understand the contradictions and peculiarities of his character - his apparent dislike of the sea, his fatalisim and his strong religious sentiment, his poisonous hatred of Frenchmen and all things French, his devout belief in the institution of the monarchy and his perception of republicans as damnable atheists, his surprising knowledge of human nature despite his limited range of experience, his sound judgment which was, however, to become clouded by his attachment o Emma Hamilton. What comes across most strongly, though, is the sheer force and vigour of his personality.Forester writes that biography tends to be about people who have achieved great things and this this gives us a warped sense of humanity. Nelson's achievements, so well described here, were indeed extraordinary but, through his humanity, he is the man to whom the modern reader can easily relate. First published in 1929, this biography remains the most readable and gripping introduction to Britain's most popular naval hero. This is the real-life Hornblower. Illu ...

Kent: Chatham Publishing, Date: 2001. This from the dusterapper: " For C S Forester, a young novelist with a love of the sea, whose Hornblower novels would be read by millions, the subject of Nelson must have been irresistible. A national hero during his own time, whose heroic status grew even further after his death, Nelson was also a deeply contradictory character whose often mysterious motivation represents a challenge to any biographer. In Forester, he found one who was both perceptive and sympathetic. Without avoiding Nelson's flaws, Forester delineates a character he obviously liked, one whose personal side is always observable, and who was so much more attractive than his two great contemporaries, Wellington and Napoleon.
