Born in Beira, Moçambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first novel, Terra somnambula, appeared in 1991; a second, Estórias abensonhadas, followed in 1994 (9th edition, 2009). A Varanda do Frangipani (1996, 8th [i.e., 9th] edition, 2010), has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has published several collections of short stories, at least one of which-Vozes anoitecidas-was translated into English and published by Heinemann; his books have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole. Danuta Wojciechowska, born in Quebec, 1960, has lived in Lisbon since 1984. In 2003 she received the Prémio Nacional de Ilustração; she was the Portuguese candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen prize in 2004. This book had an initial printing of 15,000 copies.***
