ISBN10: 0299149749, ISBN13: 9780299149741, [publisher: The University of Wisconson Press, Madison, Wisconsin] Softcover A translation of an important first-hand memoir and history of Mexican California by Antonio Maria Osio, who was a Californio landowner in the San Francisco Bay area (Angel Island and Point Reyes). He wrote this memoir at the request of Jose Maria Suarez del Real at Mission Santa Clara. But both men went to live in Mexico in the early 1850s, after the American conquest of California destroyed their way of life. Osio's manuscript languished in obscurity for some time, and although Hubert Howe Bancroft eventually got hold of an incomplete copy of it when compiling his history of California, he never gave Osio full credit for the manuscript. Osio left his original manuscript with a friend in Santa Clara, and it eventually found its way into the San Francisco Archives. This first-ever English translation is by two Santa Clara University professors. Includes an introduction, the translation of the original manuscript, almost 65 pages of notes, a "Biographical Sketches" section, glossary, bibliography, index and a short section on the family of Osio. 6 x 9 inches, 388 pages.
