This neglect has been unfortunate since it has caused some erroneous assumptions about Alexanders generalship, especially in the Gedrosian campaign. Indeed, Tarn devoted only a fragment of a sentence to the problem: "as for commissariat, supplies were collected in each district as conquered and used for the next advance." In fact, we hope to show that generally the opposite was the case. Because of the restricted capabilities of the methods of land transportation available to Alexander, only a limited amount of supplies could be carried from one district to the next. Hence, Alexander would have to arrange the collection of provisions in advance, and this was done with the local officials, who regularly surrendered to him before the army marched into their territory.
