First edition, first printing. 19 figures, 46 tables and 34 illustrations. More than any other event, the First World War defined the 20th century - it killed more than 9 million men, turned four great empires into a multitude of republics, its dire economic consequences condemned the world to its worst modern depression.nThe war spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, mortgaged the British Empire, bled France dry, and thrust world economic power on an unready America. Yet the victor's stated objective of curbing German power was not achieved, the war ultimately made Germany a far more formidable threat, under the leadership of a decorated veteran of the trenches. In the book Professor Ferguson explodes the myths of 1914-18, arguing that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable and that it was Britain which needlessly turned a continental conflict into a world war. Having taken this fateful decision, Britain frittered away the enormous economic superiority which would have settled the war swiftly in her favour. ISBN10: 0713992468, ISBN13: 9780713992465, [publisher: Allen Lane, London] Hardcover THE PITY OF WAR Niall Ferguson. Allen Lane The Penguin Press, London 1998 Second Impression ISBN 0713992468 624pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in mint unmarked condition in a mint unclipped dust wrapper. Ferguson argues that Britain was as much to blame for the start of the war as was German militarism, and that had Britain sacrificed Belgium to Germany, the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution would never have happened, Germany would have created a united European state, and Britain could have remained a superpower. He also contends that there was little enthusiasm for the war in Britain in 1914, but equally he claims that it was not prolonged by clever manipulation of the media. Instead, he purports that the reason men fought was because they enjoyed it. He also maintains that it wasn't the severity of the conditions imposed on Germany at Versailles in 1919 that led inexorably to World War II; rather it was the comparative leniency and the failure to collect reparations in full. The Pity of War has no pretensions to offering the grand narrative of World War I. Instead it reads like a polemical tract; as such it is immensely readable, well-researched, and controversial. This large book weighs in at 1.5 Kilos so overseas customers will need to quoted international postage rates. Ref HH3 [Liphook, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 1998]
