Sir Evelyn Wood VC was an archetypal Victporian soldier, a product from the same heroic mould that produced Gordon, Wolseley, Roberts and Kitchener. Wood's military career began in the Navy in the Crimean War before he transferred to the cavalry to 'see more action' as he put it. This fire-eating attitude won him his VC in India, and he became a member of Sir Garnet Wolseley's select Ashanti Ring. His great victory over the Zulus at Kambula came the day after an almost equally terrible defeat at Hlobane, which he managed to cover up. Criticised for his ruthless slaughter of the defeated Zulus, he was aided by friends in high places - including Queen Victoria herself - although he was also dogged by the scandal surrounding his sister Kitty O'Shea, whose adulterous affair with the Irish politician Charles Stewart Parnell horrified respectable Victorian Britain.
