An introductory essay deals with the motivations for and manner of acquisition of ancient art by one of the foremost families of the British aristocracy. The museum proper of marbles had its first major impetus when the fifth Duke arranged housing for several sculptures in a magnificent conservatory, designed by the renowned architect, Henry Holland. It was the sixth Duke who completed his predecessor's transformation of the greenhouse into a sculpture gallery. It was also he, who acquired the greater number of the marbles, and illuminatingly juxtaposed them with an important group of Neo-Classical sculptures, thus providing clear visual evidence of aesthetic derivation and aspiration. The Bedford collection encompasses a variety of sculptural categories. The individual catalogue entries offer a detailed description of each antiquity, based on current research, notation of the state of preservation and an investigation of the piece within its special place in the history of Roman art and aesthetics, and all are accompanied by excellent illustrations.
