Probably most people travel to the Middle East in groups, and so I think many get lulled into thinking that their guides will tell them everything. Trust me, everything can come so fast and furious that it's easy to miss so much in the way of details. I suggest a book like this because it's just so fun to look at. Feel free to read through it before you go, and then while you're there, you have plenty of time to look things up that the guides either didn't tell you or said it so fast that you forgot. Some complaints of this book is that the maps are not as accurate as they'd like, and if you need good maps, maybe move over to Fodors. But if you're the typical tourist looking for more background information, you won't go wrong here.

I love the DK books because of all the pictures. They give you a really good idea what a place looks like before you get there plus gives you brief descriptions of the most interesting and popular places to go. It is not a stand alone book however, because it is not filled with details. For the details, you'll also need a Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. Those books are much more in depth. I always combine a DK book with one of the others and have all the info I need.

The book is beautiful. Very well presented with diagrams and easy to follow references. The quality of the printed materials is superb. It is a book that I intend to keep in my bookcase and check it prior and after the trip.

However,
- it is a book that I wouldn't carry to my journey due to its weight. I will take notes of what I consider key for the trip and leave the book behind.
- I have been user of travel books for a long time, and this is the first Eyewitness Guide I buy. It is quite a step-up in the quality of materials, but if you are like me and make your travel by yourself, I prefer the Rough Guides, or Lonely Planet, or even Frommer's that provide more insight information, such as tips, best restaurants for all budget ranges, basic language frases, not-to-miss attractions, etc.

If you are traveling in a tour, than it is a great book to carry. If not, I would leave it home.

But by any means, if I have budget to buy two or more books, I would buy this one again. And as a matter of fact, I just ordered the Rough guide to fill in the missing spots that this one has.

Now I do not know if I will be able to use these books, due to the political situation in Egypt that started yesterday January 25 2011. It might be necessary to change my route. I hope not. The best for this great country.

This is a great first book to begin an understanding of Egypt before travel. It covers all major areas in extensive detail; provides suggestions for the best places to visit while in the country; detail pictures of what to look for at various sites;and the last section on travel tips I found invaluable. It is current (2008 ed) and I especially like the size of the book, which can be tucked into a carry-on bag or a back-pack while touring and doesn't weigh a ton. "Don't leave home without it!"

Book arrived on time, and whoever owned it previously left the stubs for the exhibits and places that they visited in it. That was just a bonus. I really enjoyed it!

Not a bad guide, decent overview of all the sites and also cultural aspects of Egypt. My major complaint is that the maps are terrible. There is only one actual map, and it is only of Cairo (East of the Nile). So if you're staying in Giza (Cairo west of the Nile) you are kind of out of luck. Additionally there are loads of restaurants listed, but if they don't happen to be in Cairo then they will be no map of the location. If you're considering eating out, or doing anthing without a guide then you will need an additional guide book.

I love the Eyewitness Travel Guides and have used them for years .This one had info on all regions of Egypt and I didn't need that much on this trip but am glad that I have it for a reference. If you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Egypt, by all means, order this book.

Just the right size to carry with you. Very convenient to read about sites as you are walking through them, or decide where you want to go. Beautiful layout and photos. Not so useful for hotel, restaurant recommendations. I haven't used it on the trip to Egypt yet, but I have used this guide for other trips and it's my favorite.

I bought this book in advance of a long awaited trip to Egypt in August.I browsed it a little before going but used it each day in advance of excursions along the Nile and in Cairo. It was a lifesaver in Cairo helping me find a foreign exchange office. It really is a useful book and I even reread each chapter when we had been on visits. I would recommend it to anyone.

Having visited Egypt and then read the book was a great way to revisit an incredible experience. Explained a lot what we saw and made it clear and perhaps more understandable than at the time of the trip.

Love this little book. I bought an out dated version due to price, but it does the job perfectly. I love everything about these guides. Super format, stuffed with photos, just enough info to give you all that you need. Not the first DK I have bought and def not the last! Thanks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Numerous photos, unlike other brands of guides

This series of guides is packed with photos so you know in advance if an area is interesting (AND photogenic). This is important for me but I know that some other people prefer guide books with a lot more text, and hence more info.
