Collection of 24 poems. Lead, narrative poem is St. Agnes' Eve: "The dramatis personae include a fly-specked Mondday evening/ A cigar store with stagnant windows/ Two crooked streets/ Six policeman and Louiie Glatz... Louie holds up the cigar for $14.92, does not stop when Officer orders him to and whips out a gun. The poem explodes with "rat-a-tat-tats" and "blam-blam-blams". Dolan dead and moments later, Louie the Rat's soul "rose through his mouth in the form of a derby hat". New York: Coward McCann, 1929. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 1929, First Edition of the author's first book. Hardcover, blue cloth. Very Good a Good dust jacket. Minor shelfwear to the spine ends; previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown; light straining tot he front inner hinge. Clean contents. The DJ is split along the majority of the fold where the spine meets the front panel, but it is still attached at the lower 2 inches; spine faded; shallow loss at spine ends; 2 think pieces missing from the front panel. Overall an attractive copy, with the DJ now protected in mylar. Fearing is known as 'The poet of the American Depression.' From the publisher's Songs of Today Series.
