New York, New York: Freeman Hunt, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover--leather. Good. Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 712 pages + engraved portrait of James Tallmadge, gilt spine titles on decorative leather. A good clean, hard cover overall with general shelf wear, boards scuffed at all edges, fore-corner tips through to boards, hinges and binding solid, paper lightly yellowed but scattered foxing throughout and more heavily present at the margins. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates after each volume of individual issues had been published. Note: Merchants' Magazine' began publication in July, 1839 and established itself as the leading business publication of its agecovering all topics from the Tea Trade and comercial law to Railroads and Banking, and offered many valuable statistical reviews of industry for the period, including . As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time.
