Chicago: University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1929, 1929. A good research copy that is probably better than just grade of good. But it does has the typical ex-library markings on preliminary pages and back endpapers. Properly de-accessioned. Many of the surviving copies are ex-library. The book is a well known artistic tour-de-force by this Polish-American artist out of the Chicago artistic renaissance of the 1920's. Szukalski's architectural and sculptural designs were forward looking to say the least. Many go beyond being art deco into an even more modernistic realm. He also produced art in Poland but his works were destroyed by the Nazi demolitions of WWII. However, within these pages are approximately 160 full page images of his artistic creations. Pages of book are unpaginated but there are 53 pages of text followed by my count 162 b &w photogtaphic plates. Contents clean as is the binding overall. A very decent copy for an ex-library book. Edgewear to the cloth, and old sticker of library on spine. Hinges have been archivally reinforced so the binding is strong even though the book is a large, heavy one which would normally be subject to wear and cracking of the binding. The blue tape reinforcement of the hinges is expertly done. . First Edition. Blue Cloth. Good/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Profusely Illustrated with Photo Plates Showing German Bracteates. Quarto, 53 pp text+ 162pp Plates. Ex Library (marked Withdrawn).

San Francisco: Last Gasp, 2020. Third Edition, Revised and Expanded. Hardcover Hardcover. New Book. 25cm x 22cm. 208 pages, colour illustrations. Illustrated matte papered boards. Stanislaw Szukalski was a Polish sculptor, painter, draftsman and anthropologist. He was part of the Chicago Renaissance in the 1920s, enjoyed fame in 1930s Poland as a nationalistic sculptor, but spent his last years in obscurity. This book presents a major survey of his portraiture of peers, patrons, and historical figures. Most artworks are accompanied by essays and background information, along with personal anecdotes and reflection, providing an intimate and articulate discussion on art, politics, philosophy, and more. Szukalski is now remembered for both his striking artwork and political, scientific, and philosophical views, including the pseudoscientific-historical theory of Zermatism. In 2018 Szukalski became the subject of the critically acclaimed Netflix documentary 'Struggle: The Life and Lost Art of… Read More

Debossed Linen Over Boards. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 152pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by An Art Service. This is the charming hardbound catalogue published in conjunction with the first Gagosian Gallery solo exhibition by Polish-born, New York-based artist Piotr Uklanski. "Bialo-Czerwona" (white-red), referring to Poland's bi-colored flag, is a nationalist slogan as familiar to Poles as "Red, White, and Blue" is to Americans. Uklanski's title unites diverse works that engage typical imagery of his native Poland and play on the red/white palette. Although it is, on one level, authentically Polish, in its use of populist decorative traditions and political symbols alluding to the country's not-so-distant Communist past the exhibition is also a highly… Read More
