Camden Town cannot claim any ancient origins: it was created in 1791 when the Earl of Camden let out some plots of land and two pubs (Mother Red Cap and Mother Black Cap) and a few houses were renamed. John Richardson traces the areas growth since the late 18th century, through the opening of the Regents Canal and the arrival of the railways, up to the 1940s.
