About this title:

Synopsis: Using his personal knowledge of the area, research beyond the official history of the conflict, and contemporary maps and photos, McCarthy charts the daily struggle of this bloody World War I conflict, one of the most controversial and studied in the history of war.

Review: this is without a doubt one the best books that has been produced in a field that has seen no shortage of excellent works. The maps are first class, and the daily descriptions of individual regiments and companies, enables a greater understanding of the complex sequence of events. The only way to understand how good this book really is, is to read it. Quite simply fantastic. One of the best topographical studies ever. Buy it! --By the_bald_man

In an attempt to track down where my great Uncles regiment (2nd Battalion Kings Own Scottich Borderers)was during the Somme, I bought this book. Rather than being a literary narrative describing the Somme it tells in a truncated diary style the movements of the many regiments, battalions and brigades that formed Kitcheners army during this most famous battle. If you are interested in the Somme and/or are researching material then this book is superb. Goes into the minute detail that a narrative book could not possibly do and includes maps that show locations of troop movements and in some cases even describes the weather conditions of the day. Where appropriately, casualty numbers are also listed. By the way, I did in fact find as close as possible, where my great Uncle was killed after having visited his grave last year in Rouen with the help of this book. --By E. Greenwood

I bought this book as I was researching my great uncle who was killed on the Somme aged 19 in 1916. It was very helpful in finding out where his battalion was during various periods of the WW1 and it's laid out in a very easy format to follow. For those interested in the battle of the Somme itself the day by day account is excellent. Not long after buying the book I went to France to visit his grave. An unforgettable experience. The Somme in Picardy is a beautiful region of France. --By Gwen Draith
