About this title:

Synopsis: Book by Bosch, Robert

From Booklist: More than 150 automotive specialists authored this revised edition of a reference standard. While most of the contributors are associated with the giant German manufacturer Robert Bosch, several other European companies and universities are also represented. A three-page listing of authors notes contributors' affiliations. This paperback-size book is intended for engineers, professional technicians, and other knowledgeable experts. The new edition is more than 140 pages longer than the previous one and contains 1,076 illustrations, diagrams, and tables. Roughly 40 sections of the book have been revised, and 11 new subject sections added. Some of the topics revised include exhaust systems, tires, steering, and braking systems. A few of the newly added topics include sensors, actuators, navigation systems, and mobile telephones. Coverage is international, providing information on both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. For example, the section on exhaust emissions lists emissions limits in 11 countries, including the U.S.

Users can gain access to information only through the three-page contents section or the 29-page index. Scattered throughout the text are cross-references. Some sections of the book make extensive use of mathematics and would be understandable only by persons with training in mathematics on a college level; other sections would be comprehensible to any educated person. A typical topic has a short explanatory paragraph and then several pages of detailed text illustrated with line drawings.

This is a unique reference book with few, if any, comparable sources. There are many auto repair guides for laypeople, but the Automotive Handbook is for professionals. It should be considered by public, vo-tech high school, and engineering libraries with extensive automotive collections.
