Synopsis: 1990 Charles Scribner hardcover, Stanley A. Blumberg (Energy and Conflict), Louis G. Panos. Known as father of the American H-Bomb, Teller continues to play a crucial role in U.S. nuclear weapons policy. Born a Hungarian Jew in 1908, the young physicist studied with such greats as Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr. Fleeing Nazism, he became a member of the Manhattan Project team which developed the world's first atomic bomb.
From Library Journal:
Teller was a controversial figure prior to his development of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) and has become even more so as the debate over the technical and moral issues of SDI continues. Blumberg, author of the 1976 biography Energy and Conflict: The Life and Times of Edward Teller (o.p.), and Panos, a columnist for The Baltimore Sun, have done an excellent job in dealing with the complexity of Teller's life and work. Although the book traces Teller's life from his early years in Hungary and subsequent relocation to Western Europe and the United States, the authors focus primarily on the evolution of his position as a scientist actively involved in the development of the atomic and hydrogen bombs to chief spokesperson for SDI. While the authors had Teller's cooperation, they have not produced a simplistic pro-Teller, pro-SDI treatise but rather a balanced and fascinating analysis.
