The Free Speech Movement

Goines offers an encyclopedic account of the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley in the mid-1960s, focusing on his role in the sit-ins and other protests occurring between September and December 1964. While some readers may not share his enthusiasm for the minutiae of history, this work will no doubt serve as the standard sourcebook for the period. Goines has incorporated comments from former students, academics, and administrators, including student leader Mario Savio and Professor Nathan Glazer, that provide valuable alternative insights. Appendixes include a guide to local and national committees and organizations of the day, dramatis personae, a chronology of the Movement, and a "Free Speech Songbook"--consisting mostly of rewordings of well-known songs. Complementary studies include Todd Gitlin's The Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage (Bantam, 1987) and Jack Whalen's Beyond the Barricades: The Sixties Generation Grows Up ( LJ 9/15/89).
