The idea is good but the writing sometimes is uneven; a few chapters stress history and politics more than weaponry and tactics. Coverage is best on the world wars but skimpy on the pre-gundpowder and nuclear eras. Numerous information boxes and cutaway drawings range from good to exquisite, leaving the reader wishing for more. Appealing to both general readers and YAs, this is a good buy for public libraries.
