Daniel Marston is a professor in Military Studies in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University and Principal of the Military and Defense Studies Program at the Australian Command and Staff College. He completed his doctorate in the history of war at Balliol College, Oxford University. He previously held the Ike Skelton Distinguished Chair of the Art of War at the US Army Command and General Staff College. He was previously a Senior Lecturer in War Studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. His research focuses on the topic of how armies learn and reform Twelve world-renowned military historians provide a fresh reevaluation of the events, troops, strategies, and tactics of the Pacific campaign of World War II. Despite unforgiving conditions and brutal jungle fighting that drained resources and morale, the American advance across the ocean towards the Japanese homelands drove the evolution of ever more innovative amphibious warfare, and increasingly desperate Japanese countermeasures. Bringing together American, Japanese, Australian and British perspectives, each chapter of "The Pacific War Companion" focuses on a different aspect of the conflict - from operational planning to the experiences of the men on the ground, and from the assault on Pearl Harbor to the atomic annihilation of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The contributors include: Dennis Showalter, Ken Kotani, Tomoyuki Ishizu, Raymond Callahan, Robert Love, David Horner, Theodore Gatchel Joseph Alexander, Bruce Gudnundsson, Richard Frank, and H. P. Willmott. Among the topics covered are: Pearl Harbor, Command Structure, Allied Strategy, Burma Campaign, Southwest Pacific Campaign, ANZAC, Admiral Nimitz, Naval Strategy, Amphibious Warfare, and the Battle for Okinawa. 2005.
