Choosebooks/ZVABFundus-Online GbR Borkert Schwarz Zerfaß ISBN10: 0226033961, ISBN13: 9780226033969, [publisher: The University of Chicago Press] Softcover XXXV; 264 S.; zahlr. Illustr. (s/w); 20 cm; kart. Gutes Ex.; leichte Gebrauchs- und Lagerspuren; Einband berieben. - Englisch. - This third edition of Chicago's Famous Buildings is completely revised in all aspects-the listing of the buildings, their categorizing, and many of their descriptions. The decade between the second and third editions has seen the addition of many outstanding buildings and the loss of several old ones. Fortunately, the net total is still one of the nation's outstanding collections of architecture-principally because the city was once home to such creative geniuses as Louis Sullivan, Daniel H. Burnham, John Root, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and thus contains structures like the Rookery, the Reliance Building, the Auditorium, the Chamley House, the Robie House, and the 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments. Instead of grouping buildings according to merit in historic styles or buildings of the Chicago School, Prairie School, general interest, and recent buildings, as was done in previous editions, this edition arranges them by geographic area, discussing the oldest buildings in an area first and continuing to the present. The date given for each building is the date of completion, as nearly as can be determined. The several maps show the location of each building. This is done for the convenience of persons using the book as a guide. Altogether 164 buildings and areas are listed now, as against 112 in the previous edition. Not only has the number of entries increased by 52, but also more than half the total number of entries are new. (Vorwort) // INHALT : Foreword ---- The Chicago School: Original Principles.
