Swanson's early settlers had to have strong characters to survive in an unforgiving environment. their rugged determination and independance was epitomised by William Swanson. The first people to use the Swanson valley, the Te Kawerau a Maki tribal group, did not establish permanent settlements. A valley was too difficult to protect from marauding tribes, while the soils were unproductive.Seasonal food gathering was the valley's only use for Maori. No wonder early British settlers with dreams of a promised land had to face the reality of poor soils, scrub covered steep slopes, isolation and uneconomic farmlets. Village settlement and rehabilitation schemes were generally unsuccessful in spite of the best intentions of the politicians. Outside employment was necessary to subsidise the meagre income from farming activities. This is still the case today. An important section of this book is devoted to the recollections of members of some of the early settler families.
