12. Lennox and Freda
by Tony Scotland
Price: USD 71.78
Dealer: AbebooksUK, Wild & Homeless Books
Description: ISBN10: 0859553191, ISBN13: 9780859553193, [publisher: Michael Russell Publishing Ltd] Hardcover First Edition Signed and inscribed by Tony Scotland on the title page to Dr John Birch, who had a long and distinguished career in music. As Organist and Master of the Choristers at Chichester Cathedral, Dr Birch (working with Chichester's Dean Walter Hussey) commissioned new choral works for the Cathedral Choir from several composers including Lennox Berkeley, who is the Lennox in the title of this book. Freda is Freda Bernstein, who Lennox met in the BBC Music Department. She was 20 years younger than him, and after she became pregnant, he married her in the winter of 1946. This was an event which caused some astonishment, as (for example) Lennox had previously lived with Benjamin Britten as his partner, and indicated that he could never make love to a woman. What happened? He adored her, they shared a bed one night in a spare room, "a bit small for both", and as Tony Scotland puts it, he "responded to the heat of the moment". They went on to have two more children. As this snippet alone illustrates, Lennox Berkeley had an interesting life, described in this well-researched book in considerable detail. The source notes cover 66 pages, the bibliography 14, and the index 35. There's an excellent selection of photographs, and the whole book is produced to a very high standard. The jacket design is by Humphrey Stone; the book is handsomely set in Stone's favoured type Sabon. There's no markings to the text, and just a few minor signs of shelfwear and handling, for example just a few small creases where you can see the edge of a page has been held (319-322, 429-442). The black boards are still solid, with just a little bit of pushing in at the top and bottom of the spine. The jacket likewise has some minor rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine, and along the edges and at the corners, and a few other superficial marks. Not price-clipped. A note on the copyright page acknowledges a grant from the RVW (Ralph Vaughan Williams) Trust towards the publication of this volume. It clearly had a generous budget. There is, for example, a not-often seen photograph of W.H. Auden at Oxford in 1926, which is in the plates alongside one of Lennox Berkeley also at Oxford in 1926. Lennox is carefully-lit, with his fringe over one eye, and a flower in his button-hole. [Bridport, United Kingdom] [Publication Year: 2010]
